"IPAD" Prevents New iPad Sales in China

The long dispute between a Chinese company Proview with Apple, is going to be a big problem for Apple to sell its recently unveiled iPad.

Proview Technology (a subsidiary of Taiwan's Proview International) admitted to have sent a letter to vendors and dealers in China to immediately stop selling the iPad. "Anyone who does these mean in direct violation of company patents. We will not hesitate to take legal action," said Proview Technology in the letter.

This is one of Proview's strategies to put more pressure on Apple over the China market. In its lawsuit, Proview demands Apple to pay 1.6 billion U.S. dollars for breaching its trademark. Originally, Proview's IPAD is an All in One PC, developed since 1998 and marketed in 2000. IPAD stands for Internet Personal Access Device

Apple defends itself by stating that Apple had bought worldwide rights to the iPad trademark from Proview International in 2009. Proview contends the sale excluded the mainland Chinese trademark. A Chinese court is considering an appeal by Apple of an earlier ruling against its claim to the trademark.
